Thanks for writing Erick. Over time I've come to make distinctions between "time sensitive opportunities" and building a business.
If some rolled a portable slot machine up to your door and asked you to deposit some money and take a chance before he moved on to your neighbor's house - that's a time sensitive opportunity. You put in your money, pull the handle, and either win or lose. Keeping in mind that the house always comes out ahead the majority of the time. In short, it's a gamble.
Opportunities to insert your cash and pull the lever arrive in your inbox daily.

Building a business is what an entrepreneur should be doing when not answering the door.

While I'm no stranger to answering the door myself, I have to say that I do so with much less frequency than ever before.

I have a friend who buys Internet Marketing programs and tools as a hobby. He never does much with the tools, but he does share them with me.
Going on 1 year, I've never found a real moneymaker in any of them. I've found some decent tools, but that's about it.

Jim, you wrote, "Unfortunately, I haven’t heard from Gary in too many years and the last letter I sent him came back undeliverable, so I don’t even know how to tell you where to get ahold of him or his materials."
I've been a long-time follower of the late Mr. Halbert's writing style. (Seems he passed suddenly from a heart attack a few years ago).

Just FYI:
A bunch of his old sales/newletters are still available at http://thegaryhalbertletter.com - a priceless and most entertaining resource for me.

It was bastardized for awhile by John Carlton and a few of his cronies for awhile promoting all of their sites/seminars. Fortunately, someone got all of that crap cleaned off the site recently and it is back to how it was before Gary's passing.

Well said, Mr. Krug. Thank you.

I have subscribed and un-subscribed over the years to a variety of email lists. Not willy-nilly, either. I started with one trusted source, and over the years I added one at a time that was endorsed by a source I already had some confidence in. After a while, I noticed a consistent pattern.

1) Most of the pitches were of the form "This is all you need to make your fortune!" Occasionally I bought one that sounded interesting. Whenever I did, I was immediately presented with an "upgrade," or an add-on priced even higher that I was told I really needed if I "was serious." This, of course, implies that what one just bought is not really adequate after all. This happens all the time.

2) The various email lists are constantly promoting new products. If one actually tried to take them at their word and use their stuff, one would get nowhere because before one is able to study, learn and master one product or course, the seller is pitching something different that would have one abandon everything one is doing and start studying and learning and building something different. One would be forever starting something new and never get anything actually working.

3) Nowadays the few lists I have stayed on constantly bombard me with videos. I hate videos. Videos take a lot of time to watch. Even more for me because I have a low download speed. If I even tried to watch the videos they keep throwing at me, I would get nothing else done all day. To add insult to injury, most of the few videos I have bothered to look at just display static text and "read" it at me! I can read a web page or PDF much faster than those videos read at me. In most cases there is nothing, absolutely nothing, there that must be seen and heard to be understood. It's just a gimmick. A very time-consuming, annoying gimmick. I almost always promptly delete anything that says "video."

4) The few videos I have bothered to watch that claimed to teach something have turned out to be instructions on how to use a product the provider is selling. The information and methods taught in the video are useless unless one buys the product. Since I have stopped buying stuff (I have already bought over $1,000.00 worth of info products. By now I shouldn't need anything else!), all of the videos are worthless to me since I have no intention of buying the products they show one how to use!
