Social Networks

Q: With all the social networks, which ones are worth pursuing.

A: My clients are primarily larger companies and businesses with deep pockets, so they pay me to set them with all of them.  The nice thing about that is that I get to see what really works and what doesn’t for a variety of business types.  Here’s what I discovered.

You can make money with Facebook, MySpace and Twitter.  Most people want traffic as though that’s a cure all.  But traffic is worthless if people aren’t buying!  If people aren’t buying, there’s a reason.  Either you have the wrong product, the wrong price, the wrong offer, or bad timing.  It’s tough selling long sleeve shirts in Florida during the summertime!  I’ve worked with budgets of about $2,000 a month at certain points.  Buying traffic isn’t the same as attracting business.  They’re worlds apart.

Most successful businesses will attract about 90% of their business through two primary marketing methods.  Keep that in mind as you approach the social networks and all the other online methods.  As you test different networks such as MySpace, Twitter,  YouTube, Google Adwords, etc… keep in mind, they are just tools.  Tools serve the person holding them.  But in most cases these days, it’s the other way around.  People are becoming slaves to the tools of technology and marketing, spending countless hours blogging, tweeting, creating backlinks, adjusting addwords, etc.   The tools are there to assist you – helping you communicate with your audience.  Test a few a time.  No more than just a few.  After about six months of testing and making adjustments, you’ll see whether or not (YouTube Videos, for example), is the right fit for your marketing campaign.
